Venezuela earthquake death toll rises to 6,438 FAST-MOVING

The death toll from the twin earthquakes that struck Venezuela on June 24 has risen to 6,438, according to National Assembly President Jorge Rodríguez. The disaster, which included magnitude 7.2 and 7.5 tremors, heavily impacted the coastal state of La Guaira and the capital, Caracas.

Authorities have evaluated 59,109 buildings, determining that 34,680 are habitable, 13,733 have access restrictions, and 10,696 are high-risk. Approximately 24,000 homes are considered completely uninhabitable. To assist survivors, the government has delivered 335 homes and aims to provide 4,000 by the end of the year. Over 86,000 people have received hospital treatment.

International relief efforts are ongoing. Mexico has delivered over 1,100 tons of aid via naval vessels, and the European Union has sent 30 tons of supplies, with an additional 10 million euros pledged for recovery. The World Bank estimates direct physical damages at 19.6 billion dollars.

Seismic activity continues in the region. A magnitude 4.0 earthquake was recorded near La Guaira on Tuesday morning, though no immediate damage was reported. Geologists warn that aftershocks could persist for several months as the fault line adjusts.
