Venezuela earthquake death toll rises to 6,509
Two months after the devastating double earthquakes of June 24, the Venezuelan government has updated the official death toll to 6,509. The seismic events, which measured magnitudes of 7.2 and 7.5, primarily impacted the northern regions, including Caracas and the coastal state of La Guaira.
According to Jorge Rodríguez, President of the National Assembly, 226,696 people have received medical attention in hospitals. Reconstruction efforts are ongoing, with authorities reporting that over 600,790 tons of debris have been removed. In terms of housing, officials have inspected 60,785 residences, classifying 11,001 as high risk and 335 as successfully delivered to affected families.
A significant discrepancy remains regarding missing persons. While the government has not provided a formal updated figure for the missing since late June, local officials like La Guaira Governor Alejandro Terán have noted reports of approximately 1,579 missing individuals from families. Conversely, non-governmental organizations and international observers estimate the number of missing persons could range between 17,800 and 50,000.
