Venezuela earthquake displacement increases human trafficking risks
Recent earthquakes in Venezuela have increased the vulnerability of thousands of people, forcing many to flee their homes for temporary shelters. International organizations, including UNICEF and UNFPA, have warned that these emergency situations create conditions that traffickers can exploit, particularly through false promises or deceptive job offers.
UN Women has highlighted that limited access to safe and accessible housing increases the risk of sexual violence, gender-based violence, and human trafficking for women. Additionally, Plan International has raised concerns regarding the safety and privacy of girls and young women in temporary camps, noting that the disruption of family networks and essential services heightens the risk of exploitation.
