Venezuela earthquake dog rescues draw hope and protest after Mariposa killing

Bayli, a small poodle rescued after spending 29 days beneath the rubble of the June 24 double earthquake that devastated Venezuela’s northern coast, was reunited with a new family. The dog’s owner perished in the disaster, and rescuers shared footage of firefighters providing water and extracting the animal, which quickly became a symbol of resilience. By mid‑July, authorities reported that 648 animals had been saved from the affected region.

Another rescued dog, Mariposa, survived the quake after being pulled from the ruins of La Guaira, but was later found dead after an attack in the Lídice district of Caracas. The killing triggered public outrage, leading to a sit‑in protest on Urdaneta Avenue and a march demanding accountability for animal cruelty. Prominent figures, including actress Liliana Morillo Rodríguez, called for swift justice, accusing the suspect of fleeing and urging authorities to act.
