Venezuela earthquake recovery: Three months of humanitarian crisis
Three months after two powerful earthquakes struck Venezuela, the humanitarian crisis persists across several states, most notably in La Guaira. The official death toll stands at 6,509, though some platforms report significantly higher numbers of missing persons. Economic losses are estimated by Munich RE to potentially reach $30 billion.
In La Guaira, search and recovery efforts continue at the Residencias Caribe building, where between 80 and 100 bodies have been recovered, but estimates suggest 50 to 60 people may still be trapped. The Venezuelan Red Cross has assisted approximately 24,000 people and 6,000 families with essential supplies, hygiene kits, and water purification tools.
Infrastructure recovery shows mixed results. The National Pantheon in Caracas has reached 85% physical completion under the 'Venezuela Renace' plan. Meanwhile, the WHO and PAHO have rehabilitated the La Sanidad clinic in La Guaira to strengthen local health services. However, many families remain in temporary shelters, and critical infrastructure like schools and housing in Morón and Colinas de Mara II remains in a state of disrepair or total loss.
