Venezuela earthquake relief drives aid as thousands remain homeless
Twin earthquakes of magnitude 7.2 and 7.5 struck Venezuela on 24 June, killing at least 5,398 people, injuring thousands and leaving more than 6,000 individuals without homes. The World Bank estimates direct physical damage at US$19.6 billion, while UNICEF has appealed for US$65.7 million to assist roughly 470,000 people, including 169,000 children.
Humanitarian response spans several countries. The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter‑day Saints pledged US$2.8 million and food kits; Samaritan’s Purse has set up field hospitals treating thousands; Global Empowerment Mission has shipped about 1,440 metric tons of aid on 25 flights. Colombia’s Banco de Alimentos de Bogotá has delivered a cumulative 237 tonnes of food, water and hygiene supplies, and Mexico collected 18 tonnes of food for transport via Veracruz. More than 23,000 people are housed in 107 temporary camps, while volunteers in South Florida, Doral and Miami continue packing and dispatching aid.
