Venezuela earthquake relief targets child mental health, amputee care
The twin magnitude‑7.5 and 7.2 earthquakes that struck northern and central Venezuela on 24 June 2026 left at least 5,546 dead and injured more than 6,000 people, including 830 children under ten, 922 aged 11‑17 and 713 seniors. World Vision says the disaster has created an "invisible" mental‑health crisis for children; it has opened safe‑space shelters in refugee sites, providing food, water and psychosocial support to 44,252 individuals, about a third of whom are children.
In Chile, Four Points by Sheraton Santiago organized a charity dinner called “Una mano a Venezuela” on 29 July 2026, with proceeds earmarked for UNICEF to assist families still displaced by the quake.
Medical teams continue to treat severe injuries. Hospitals reported up to 77 amputations in a single day, and an estimated US$2 million is needed for prosthetic and rehabilitation services. The Colombian‑Venezuelan Fundación CIREC launched the “Fondo Humanitario 77” to fund prostheses, orthoses and wheelchairs for affected victims. The earthquakes also destroyed over 400 schools and caused 190 building collapses.
