Venezuela earthquake survivor Damelis Díaz denounces officials after deadly quake

Damelis Díaz, who lost her daughter in the June 24 double earthquake that devastated La Guaira, publicly confronted Deputy Nicolás Maduro Guerra during his visit to the coastal region. She accused him of backing the Iranian firm Suma, which built housing deemed “seismic‑proof” but collapsed, causing her daughter's death. Díaz said security agents grabbed her arms, leaving bruises, and pledged to keep pressing the authorities for accountability.

Separately, families continue to search for missing victims. Liliana Figueroa recounted trying to locate her 16‑year‑old daughter Angelina Guerra and her former partner’s body among thousands of corpses stored in makeshift morgues at the Port of La Guaira. She described the chaotic identification process, with bags of bodies and unorganized records, highlighting the scale of the humanitarian crisis caused by the earthquakes.
