Venezuela earthquake victims require over 150 prosthetics

More than 150 people affected by the June 24 earthquakes in Venezuela require prosthetic limbs, according to data from the Juan Pablo Dos Santos and CIREC foundations. Bianca Dámaso, director of the Ortoprotécnica workshop, noted that while these figures are based on foundation records, there are currently no official government statistics regarding the number of people in need of prosthetics.

Most patients have undergone transfemoral amputations, primarily in the lower limbs, though some cases involve upper limb or bilateral amputations. The Ortoprotécnica workshop plans to assist 31 cases, providing access to prosthetics and strengthening physiotherapy. The age of those requiring assistance ranges from 5 to 79 years old.

Due to the high cost of prosthetics, which can range from $3,500 to $25,000, many patients cannot access them privately. To mitigate costs and increase patient reach, the workshop is utilizing labor costs equivalent to only 25% of standard rates. The raw materials used are sourced from Germany, the United States, England, and Asia, and carry international health certifications, including FDA approval.
