Venezuela earthquake leaves over 120 teachers dead, 221 children killed and 273 missing
The 24 June double‑magnitude earthquake in northern Venezuela killed more than 120 teachers and professors, according to Consenso Educativo director Fausto Romeo. Eighteen school buildings in Caracas, La Guaira and Miranda were completely destroyed and another 45 suffered serious structural damage that must be repaired before schools can reopen.
Cecodap’s monitoring report recorded 1,405 verified cases involving children and adolescents, including 221 child deaths and 273 missing youths. The report also noted 437 injured minors, 233 families displaced to other states and 45 schools with damage requiring repair.
A virtual emotional‑containment session titled “Emotions amid unexpected events” was held for participants of the National Seedlings Scientific Program. Psychopedagogue María Gabriela Chalbaud and psychologists Moisés Jiménez and María Alexandra Morales led the meeting, offering tools to help children and youth cope with the psychological impact of the earthquakes.
