Venezuela earthquakes: Cuban woman recovers six family members' bodies

Mabel Hernández, a Cuban resident of Venezuela, has recovered the bodies of six family members 43 days after devastating earthquakes struck northern Venezuela on June 24. The deceased include her parents, brother, sister-in-law, and nieces and nephews, who were buried under the rubble of a building in Naiguatá, La Guaira state.

Following the identification of the remains on August 6, Hernández has requested assistance from the Cuban consulate in Venezuela to transport her parents' ashes back to Cuba. Her brother and his family will be buried in Venezuela.

Official reports from Venezuelan authorities indicate the earthquakes resulted in 6,301 deaths and over 16,700 injuries, with tens of thousands of homes damaged. The World Bank estimates direct physical damages at approximately $19.6 billion. While official figures for Cuban casualties are unavailable, independent monitors report at least ten deaths among the Cuban community.
