Venezuela earthquake death toll rises to 6,125 as rescue and rebuilding continue
Two powerful earthquakes measuring 7.2 and 7.5 struck Venezuela on 24 June 2026 near La Guaira, causing massive destruction across the coastal state and the capital region. The government’s latest bulletin raised the official death count to 6,125, an increase of 579 since the first tally, and recorded that 60,992 people have received medical care. Over 43,679 households were affected, 346,755 tonnes of debris have been cleared and 287 new homes have been delivered to families.
The United Nations initially estimated more than 50,000 people missing, but a diplomatic source later suggested the figure was around 10,000 or higher, a number the authorities have not disclosed. Volunteers continue to search collapsed buildings, with individuals such as carpenter Victor Morales digging for missing relatives. International rescue teams from the United States, Israel, Guyana, El Salvador and others were deployed, and the UN aid chief Tom Fletcher highlighted the scale of the humanitarian need.
Economic assessments by the World Bank put direct physical damage at roughly $19.6 billion, threatening the country’s recovery for years. Despite the disaster, the port of La Guaira remains operational and the nationalization of imported goods has not been halted, though many hotels and businesses in the hardest‑hit parishes are still out of service.
