Venezuela economic cooperation increases as IMF uses official data
The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has begun incorporating official Venezuelan economic data into its reports, marking an increase in cooperation between the Washington-based institution and Caracas. Following high-level visits to the country, the IMF will use official figures to inform its economic assessments, moving away from a reliance solely on internal staff estimates. This development follows the Central Bank of Venezuela's resumption of monthly inflation updates.
Simultaneously, discussions regarding the potential formalization of dollarization in Venezuela highlight significant economic challenges. While the country currently operates under a de facto transactional dollarization to preserve purchasing power, transitioning to a formal state policy presents structural hurdles. These include a lack of sufficient liquid foreign exchange reserves at the Central Bank of Venezuela and the loss of macroeconomic autonomy, as a fully dollarized economy cannot finance public deficits through monetary emission.
