Venezuela electrical crisis expands to national scale
Venezuela is experiencing a worsening electrical crisis as power outages expand from the Zulia region to a national scale. Experts from Consultores 21 report that the instability has 'nationalized,' with daily interruptions affecting 99% of households in Zulia, 98% in the Andes, and 82% in Caracas.
Recent significant voltage fluctuations and blackouts have impacted the Gran Caracas area and multiple states, including Aragua, Carabobo, Falcón, Miranda, Yaracuy, and Portuguesa. These failures have caused collateral issues, such as intermittent mobile network and internet outages.
Political tension surrounds the cause of the failures. Government official Delcy Rodríguez has attributed the outages to sabotage, claiming gas pressures were manipulated in protest of recent oil agreements. Conversely, opposition leaders argue the crisis is the result of long-term infrastructure neglect, lack of maintenance, and systemic corruption.
Despite these challenges, the Venezuelan government has announced a strategic alliance with GE Vernova aimed at strengthening the electrical system and supporting infrastructure for both public services and the oil industry.
