Venezuela rolls out mental‑health aid after June earthquakes

After the twin earthquakes on 24 June that struck Venezuela, mental‑health professionals and NGOs have launched a series of interventions to address the psychological fallout.

Gilberto Aldana, president of the Venezuelan Society and Foundation of Health Psychology, said mental health is a primary priority to prevent future illnesses. He warned that victims initially experience acute stress that can evolve into post‑traumatic stress disorder, depressive and anxiety symptoms. María Luisa de Aldana, head of psychiatry at Hospital Vargas, reported a surge in patients suffering from sleep disorders and panic about further quakes.

The SOStengo platform, created days after the shocks, mobilised more than 200 volunteers and has provided emotional first‑aid to over 300 cases of anxiety, insomnia, PTSD and grief. Director Ana Hines stressed that “psychological care is not a secondary complement; it is a basic need to rebuild lives.” The service offers a six‑to‑eight‑session program, with many professionals continuing support pro bono after the initial phase.

Grupo Médico Santa Paula announced a free post‑quake integral care day on 1 August 2026, offering psychological consultations and medical screenings in cardiology, gastroenterology and otorhinolaryngology, plus an optional mental‑health lab test for stress hormones.
