Venezuela faces ongoing crisis three months after devastating earthquakes

Three months after two powerful earthquakes struck Venezuela’s northern coast, the country continues to face a massive humanitarian crisis. The seismic events, which measured 7.2 and 7.5 magnitude and occurred just 39 seconds apart, resulted in an official death toll of nearly 7,000 people.

The destruction was most severe in La Guaira, a historic gateway to the Caribbean located near Caracas. The International Organization for Migration estimates that approximately 7 million people have been directly affected by the disaster. Beyond the immediate loss of life, the earthquakes caused widespread displacement, with UNHCR reporting that 18,000 individuals remain without shelter.

Medical and humanitarian organizations continue to provide essential aid. Doctors Without Borders (MSF) has treated thousands of patients for injuries including bone and muscle pain, infections, and skin diseases, while also addressing the psychological trauma of survivors. Many residents remain in temporary housing, such as tents, struggling with the loss of homes, livelihoods, and family members amidst ongoing uncertainty.
