Venezuela establishes council to evaluate Supreme Tribunal of Justice candidates
Representatives of the Venezuelan Government and the 2015 National Assembly have agreed to establish a Credentials Review Council to evaluate candidates for the Supreme Tribunal of Justice (TSJ). This agreement was reached during the second cycle of negotiations on September 25.
The Council will consist of seven jurists, including Belén Ramírez Landaeta, Rogelio Pérez Perdomo, Bernardo Pulido Márquez, Silio Sánchez, Deyanira Nieves, Federico Fuenmayor, and María Bernardoni de Govea. Four of these members have previously served as TSJ magistrates. The body is tasked with designing evaluation criteria and reviewing the professional credentials and legal suitability of all nominees to ensure technical rigor and transparency.
As part of the broader judicial restructuring, the parties also agreed to advance the designation of the Preliminary Commission of the Judicial Nominations Committee and to publish an official schedule for the selection process. This follows a legislative reform that expanded the number of civil society representatives on the Nominations Committee from 10 to 12. The ultimate goal is the total renewal of all 32 members of the TSJ.
