Venezuela gold reserves: Negotiations underway to unblock $4 billion in assets

Negotiations are underway between Venezuela’s provisional government and the opposition to unblock approximately 31 metric tons of gold held at the Bank of England. The assets, valued at roughly $4 billion, are intended to fund reconstruction efforts following a devastating double earthquake on June 24 that caused over 6,000 deaths and incurred material damages exceeding $20 billion.

The gold has been under British custody since 2019, when the United Kingdom refused to recognize Juan Guaidó’s claim to the presidency. The dialogue, mediated by the United States, aims to establish transparency and traceability for the funds to support housing, electricity, health, and debris removal. Additionally, there is a claim to $120 million resulting from a Deutsche Bank gold swap liquidation.

While experts suggest that unblocking these assets may not occur immediately, some analysts believe it could be achieved before the end of 2026. The role of U.S. influence remains a critical factor in the potential release of these international reserves.
