Venezuela faces severe electricity crisis and climate-driven shortages

Venezuela is facing a severe multi-sector crisis driven by prolonged electricity outages and extreme weather. Power cuts, which in some regions like Zulia and Táchira last between 12 and 16 hours, are disrupting essential services. Medical professionals warn that these outages are destroying temperature-sensitive medicines and biological supplies, while also interrupting life-saving treatments like kidney dialysis.

Public frustration has escalated into widespread protests, including cacerolazos, road blockages, and the burning of tires in states such as Aragua and Falcón. The electricity crisis is compounded by the El Niño phenomenon, which has triggered extreme heat and severe droughts. This has led to a national health alert for vector-borne diseases and heat exhaustion, as well as agricultural warnings regarding the viability of crops like rice and sunflower.

Economic sectors are also under pressure. The food industry reports critical challenges in maintaining production due to energy and fuel shortages, while the border region of Táchira faces structural energy deficits that threaten industrial and commercial stability.
