Venezuela electricity demand hits nine-year peak of 16,030 MW

Venezuela has recorded its highest electricity demand in nine years, reaching a peak of 16,030 megawatts (MW). The Ministry of Electric Power attributed this surge to intense heatwaves across the country, which have driven a massive increase in the use of air conditioning and industrial refrigeration.

The record comes amid ongoing instability in the National Electric System (SEN). Reports indicate that many regions outside of Caracas experience daily power outages lasting between five and six hours. Experts suggest the system remains fragile due to structural deterioration and a lack of preventative maintenance.

To address the crisis, the government is working on several initiatives, including the recovery of the Planta Centro thermoelectric plant, which is expected to add 600 MW to the grid in October. Additionally, the administration has entered into agreements with international firms, such as GE Vernova, to gradually incorporate six gigawatts into the national transmission and generation infrastructure.
