Venezuela human rights concerns rise amid 322 political prisoners

Human rights organizations and political leaders in Venezuela are highlighting ongoing issues regarding political detention and state repression. The NGO Foro Penal reported that as of October 5, 2026, there are 322 political prisoners in the country, consisting of 308 men and 14 women. Of these, 182 are civilians and 140 are military personnel. The report noted that 31 detainees hold foreign nationality and the whereabouts of one prisoner remain unknown.

In separate incidents, legal and political figures have raised alarms over specific cases of detention and violence. The family of Eloy Mayckoll Sánchez Rodríguez is seeking answers regarding his whereabouts after he was allegedly detained by the Sebin, despite a habeas corpus being issued. Additionally, opposition leader Juan Pablo Guanipa marked the eighth anniversary of the death of former councilman Fernando Albán, who died while in the custody of Sebin officials.

Human rights defender Eduardo Torres characterized Venezuelan prisons as centers of torture and expressed hope that recent U.S. legal actions against Nicolás Maduro and Cilia Flores regarding alleged torture conspiracies would advance justice. Meanwhile, reports surfaced of Defense Minister Vladimir Padrino López departing via private aircraft from Calabozo to avoid direct confrontations with local farmers protesting for agricultural support.
