Venezuela offers housing subsidies and credits to earthquake victims
On June 24, two powerful quakes struck Venezuela with magnitudes of 7.2 and 7.5, leaving at least 5,546 dead, 16,740 injured and roughly 18,000 people without homes. The interim president, Delcy Rodríguez, announced a reconstruction program that will subsidise up to 80 % of the purchase price of a home priced at $70,000 or less and 50 % for properties between $70,000 and $100,000. The subsidy comes from the Fund Venezuela Renace; the remaining 20‑50 % will be financed by public and private banks over a 25‑year credit term. Rodríguez also asked the Supreme Court to create a special jurisdiction to fast‑track civil matters on property, identity and inheritance, and pledged to protect owners’ rights to the land of destroyed apartments.
Humanitarian agencies have been active in the aftermath. Médecins Sans Frontières reported treating 2,217 patients via four mobile clinics, delivering mental‑health sessions, water‑sanitation services and 8.5 tonnes of medical supplies. Caritas Venezuela has reached almost 18,000 families, distributing more than 19,000 tonnes of aid, 17,808 emergency kits and 6.8 million litres of water. Cáritas Venezuela said it has assisted over 72,000 people and is installing a nutrition‑monitoring system in temporary shelters to prevent child malnutrition.
