Venezuela launches invasive coral eradication program in Mochima National Park

A multidisciplinary team of marine biologists from the University of Central Venezuela, technicians from the Ministry of Ecosocialism and researchers from environmental foundations have begun a technical contingency plan to control and eradicate the invasive coral Unomia stolonifera in Mochima National Park, which spans the states of Sucre and Anzoátegui. The effort uses manual underwater extraction, plastic shade barriers to block photosynthesis, precision mechanical tools, ultrasonic suction, waterproof mantles and ultraviolet laser treatment, among other methods validated by the FAO and the Global Environment Facility.

Local fishers, boat operators and students have been trained through the "Escuelas Azules" program, and more than 400 community members are involved in monitoring and prevention activities. Weekly underwater stations will assess the effectiveness of treated areas. The initiative aims to protect native coral biodiversity, sustain commercial fisheries and preserve the eco‑tourism appeal of Venezuela’s eastern bays.
