Venezuela launches national renewal of communal council leadership

Venezuela has launched a national plan to renew the leadership of approximately 18,000 communal councils. The process, announced by the Minister for Communes and Social Movements, Ángel Prado, aims to legitimize organizational structures and update representatives whose terms have expired.

The renewal process is being conducted through weekly territorial electoral fairs to accelerate participation across the country. In Maracaibo, Zulia state, the electoral fair has already begun, involving over 500 communal councils out of a total of more than 1,200 in the capital. Nixon Álvarez, director of Fundacomunal, noted that this phase is strategic for updating community projects and reinforcing the organic nature of these local instances.

The electoral cycle follows a specific sequence: the formation of electoral commissions through citizen assemblies, the updating of community plans and demographic censuses, the presentation of candidacies, and finally, the registration of results with the Ministry for Social Movements to obtain official certification.
