Venezuela mobilizes community groups for June 2026 earthquake response
Vice President sectorial of Planning Ricardo Menéndez visited the UEN Juan Lovera transitional camp in Caracas, describing the response to the June 24, 2026 earthquakes as a result of strong popular organization. He noted that 21 families are receiving detailed assistance, including medical care, psychological support, tailored nutrition and registration via fingerprint scans.
Academic commentary by Mauricio R. Pernía‑Reyes emphasized the need for citizen participation in disaster risk management and urban planning. He argued that the recent quakes exposed gaps in technical rigor and adherence to existing regulations, and called for stronger community involvement in territorial ordering as mandated by Article 128 of the 1999 Constitution. The analysis stresses that effective planning and public consultation can mitigate future seismic risks and ensure equitable urban development.
