Venezuela navigates political shifts following military attack and earthquakes

Venezuela continues to navigate significant political and social shifts following a January 3 military attack by the United States, which resulted in the abduction of President Nicolás Maduro and Cilia Flores. The interim government, led by Delcy Rodríguez, has moved toward making diplomatic concessions and overtures as Washington’s influence over the nation's economic and geopolitical landscape has expanded.

This political transition follows a period of intense instability, exacerbated by two catastrophic earthquakes. The reconstruction efforts have been complicated by years of economic sanctions and a heightened U.S. military presence, including the deployment of hundreds of troops and an increased SOUTHCOM presence at critical infrastructure.

In response to the humanitarian and social challenges, grassroots organizations like the Alba Movimientos Brigade are working within local communal circuits, such as the Romulo Gallegos circuit in Catia la Mar. These efforts aim to strengthen local popular power and community organization through relief work and cultural initiatives, such as celebrating Children’s Day, amidst the ongoing recovery process.
