United States negotiates oil stake in Venezuela

The Trump administration is reportedly in discussions with Venezuela's interim government to acquire direct ownership stakes in key Venezuelan oil fields. These negotiations aim to secure equity in high-yield fields containing approximately 90 billion barrels of proven crude, a move that could more than double the United States' oil reserves.

One proposal being considered involves a 100-year lease of several oil fields. This strategic shift toward direct resource control in the Western Hemisphere comes as the U.S. Strategic Petroleum Reserve (SPR) has fallen to its lowest level since 1983, currently standing below 300 million barrels.

The potential deal follows the January operation that led to the capture of President Nicolas Maduro and the installation of a leadership more aligned with Washington. The move is seen as an evolution of the 'Energy Dominance' paradigm, seeking to provide a strategic hedge against global supply disruptions caused by conflicts in the Middle East and the Russia-Ukraine war.
