Venezuela initiates judicial reform and TSJ renewal process

Venezuela is undergoing a significant judicial reform process aimed at renewing the Supreme Tribunal of Justice (TSJ) and fostering democratic transition. As part of the Program for Peace and Democratic Coexistence, the government has granted alternative liberty measures to 131 individuals previously detained for crimes related to institutional stability and peace.

Opposition leaders and legal experts are calling for the involvement of university deans, jurists, and bar associations to ensure the selection of independent and impartial magistrates. Julio César Moreno, an opposition delegate, emphasized the need for a serious nominations committee and a commission of legal experts to oversee the process. Constitutional lawyers suggest that replacing the TSJ leadership is a vital step toward restoring the rule of law and ensuring the separation of powers.

However, some political figures, including Delsa Solórzano, warn that simply replacing top magistrates is insufficient. They argue that a deeper restructuring is required, including the appointment of career judges through competitive processes rather than political appointments. Solórzano also noted that the success of these negotiations depends on transparency, the release of political prisoners, and the safe return of exiles.
