Venezuela political transition advances with judicial reform and prisoner release disputes

Venezuela is undergoing a political transition marked by negotiations between the interim government led by Delcy Rodríguez and opposition factions. A significant milestone in this process is a recent agreement to reform the judiciary, which includes a complete renewal of the magistrates of the Supreme Tribunal of Justice (TSJ).

Parallel to these institutional reforms, a dispute has emerged regarding the release of political prisoners. While the government announced the release of 131 individuals, human rights organizations have reported discrepancies. The NGO Foro Penal has verified 78 releases, and Justicia, Encuentro y Perdón has confirmed 82. Opposition negotiator Dinorah Figuera has called for transparency and clarity, emphasizing that a true democratic transition cannot occur while political prisoners remain in detention.

The transition process is being closely monitored by the United States, which plays a decisive role in the country's economic and political stabilization. Negotiators are expected to resume discussions in September to continue building the institutional framework necessary for future democratic elections.
