Unicef to rehabilitate water infrastructure in La Guaira, Venezuela
Unicef has announced plans to rehabilitate critical water and sanitation infrastructure in La Guaira, Venezuela, following devastating earthquakes on June 24. The project is scheduled to begin in October and will focus on the Mamo and Naiguatá water treatment plants to restore and strengthen pumping capacity and potable water production.
The initiative aims to benefit approximately 250,000 people, including an estimated 76,200 children and adolescents. Unicef representative Manuel Rodríguez Pumarol emphasized that ensuring access to safe water for children remains the top priority following the catastrophic damage caused by the seismic events.
While Unicef has mobilized $25.7 million for earthquake response efforts, the organization warned of a $40 million funding deficit. Currently, only about 24% of the required funding for water, sanitation, and hygiene sectors has been secured. The earthquakes, which included magnitudes of 7.2 and 7.5 on the Richter scale, caused significant loss of life and severe damage to civil infrastructure across the region.
