Venezuela press freedom faces significant restrictions in 2026

Human rights organizations have reported significant restrictions on press freedom and freedom of expression in Venezuela during the first half of 2026. According to reports from Espacio Público and the Un Mundo Sin Mordaza coalition, there have been 174 documented violations of freedom of expression this year, with intimidation and censorship being the primary methods used.

Key findings include 65 reported cases of restrictions, 131 violations of press freedom, and 33 detentions motivated by public opinion. The organization Justicia, Encuentro y Perdón (JEP) noted that 554 people were held for political reasons as of June 17, 2026. Digital censorship remains a major concern, with the blocking of 202 internet domains, including 65 news portals, and the systematic closure of several radio stations.

Journalists have faced physical aggression, threats, and equipment confiscation, particularly during field work such as earthquake coverage. The reports also highlight the use of the Law against Hate to prosecute individuals for social media activity, citing the case of Yorman Acevedo, who was detained for over eight months following a TikTok comment. Despite a partial lifting of blocks on the X platform, organizations warn that structural censorship remains intact.
