Venezuela press union denounces attacks on media outlet

The National Union of Press Workers of Venezuela (SNTP) has denounced an attack against the media outlet La Mañana Digital. The dispute arose after Jesús León, a political leader of the United Socialist Party of Venezuela (PSUV) and representative of the Ministry of Habitat and Housing in Falcón, publicly criticized the outlet for reporting on families displaced by earthquakes in June.

León accused the newspaper of being “yellow journalism” and spreading “false opinion matrices” regarding the housing situation in Boca de Aroa. The SNTP noted that while the official criticized the media, he failed to provide specific evidence to disprove that families are still living in temporary tents. The union characterized the official's rhetoric, which included calling the outlet “sadistic” and “liars,” as an attempt to suppress reporting on the ongoing humanitarian conditions in the region.
