Venezuela protests increase by 180% in first half of 2026

Protests in Venezuela increased by approximately 180% during the first half of 2026, according to the Observatorio Venezolano de Conflictividad Social (OVCS). The observatory recorded 3,495 protests, averaging 20 demonstrations per day, compared to 1,249 during the same period in 2025.

Demands were split almost equally between civil and political rights and economic, social, and cultural rights. In the first quarter, demonstrations focused on political freedoms and democratic guarantees following the January 3rd military operation by United States forces that resulted in the capture of Nicolás Maduro and Cilia Flores. This period included anti-imperialist rallies by supporters of the former administration.

In the second quarter, social conflict shifted toward economic issues. Workers mobilized to demand better wages, purchasing power, and labor rights. Additionally, communities protested for access to essential public services, healthcare, housing, and justice. The report also noted unrest following earthquakes in June that caused significant casualties, with citizens criticizing the government's inadequate emergency response.
