Venezuela publishes TSJ law reform to change magistrate selection process
Venezuela has officially published a reform to the Organic Law of the Supreme Tribunal of Justice (TSJ) in the Official Gazette. The reform modifies Article 65 to change the structure of the Judicial Nominations Committee.
The new committee will be composed of 23 members, including 11 deputies and 12 representatives from various sectors of society. The selection of these members requires approval from two-thirds of the National Assembly plenary. This reform initiates the constitutional process for designating all principal and substitute magistrates of the TSJ, as well as the authorities of its auxiliary bodies.
Observers from the organization Acceso a la Justicia noted that the publication in Official Gazette No. 7.074 Extraordinary occurred on September 15, four days after the constitutional 10-day deadline for promulgation had expired. Alí Daniels, director of Acceso a la Justicia, expressed concern regarding the delay in the publication process.
