Venezuela and Israel agree to restore consular relations

Venezuela and Israel have agreed to restore consular relations and establish a coordination mechanism to provide services to their respective citizens. This agreement marks a significant shift in bilateral relations, which have been severed since January 2009 when Venezuela cut ties in response to Israeli military actions in the Gaza Strip.

The rapprochement follows a visit by an Israeli humanitarian delegation to Venezuela to assist with recovery efforts after devastating earthquakes struck the country in June. The two nations have also agreed to continue technical cooperation regarding emergency response and disaster recovery.

While the agreement restores consular services, it does not currently constitute a full restoration of formal diplomatic relations. Both governments highlighted the importance of the bond between Israel and the Jewish community residing in Venezuela, describing it as a historical bridge of friendship.
