Venezuela records 1,600 aftershocks after June 24 double earthquake

The Venezuelan Foundation of Seismological Investigations (Funvisis) reported that 1,600 seismic events were recorded across the country between June 24 and July 30, covering magnitudes from below 2.0 to above 6.9. The double earthquake on June 24 consisted of a magnitude‑7.2 quake near San Felipe, Yaracuy, followed a minute later by a magnitude‑7.5 event off the coast of La Guaira.

Official figures released by National Assembly president Jorge Rodríguez indicated 5,546 deaths, 16,740 injuries and 17,907 people left homeless. Damage affected 856 buildings, with 190 collapses, and forced 107 temporary camps to shelter 23,811 residents. Rescue operations involved 30,989 personnel, 2,278 international rescuers and 31,745 volunteers, who treated 47,942 patients and distributed 51.2 million litres of water and 10,977 tonnes of food.
