Venezuela rejects Uruguay's refusal to restore diplomatic ties
The Venezuelan government has formally rejected statements from Uruguayan Foreign Minister Mario Lubetkin, labeling them an “inadmissible intrusion” into the nation's internal affairs. The dispute follows an interview Lubetkin gave to the Brazilian newspaper Folha de S. Paulo, in which he stated that Uruguay would not resume diplomatic relations with Caracas as long as Delcy Rodríguez remains in power.
Lubetkin questioned the legitimacy of the current Venezuelan administration, noting that the political situation has not fundamentally changed following the capture of Nicolás Maduro in January and the subsequent appointment of Rodríguez as acting president. He argued that Uruguay would only re-establish ties once democratic elections are held and their results are validated by an independent judicial body.
In response, Venezuelan Foreign Minister Félix Plasencia condemned the Uruguayan position as reflecting “antiquated and arrogant views” that disrespect national sovereignty and self-determination. Plasencia emphasized that Venezuela's political future will be determined exclusively by its people in accordance with the country's Constitution and legal framework.
