Venezuela: Rights groups demand prisoner release and expanded ICRC access

Human rights organizations and political groups in Venezuela are intensifying demands for the release of political prisoners and improved prison oversight. The Bloque Constitucional and the Primero Justicia party have both called for the immediate and unconditional release of detainees, with Primero Justicia noting that over 400 people remain imprisoned and criticizing the lack of transparency regarding recent releases.

In response to the government's announcement of a technical cooperation agenda with the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), the NGO Clippve has urged authorities to expand access to specific high-risk facilities, including El Rodeo I, Yare, and Fuerte Guaicaipuro. The group highlighted reports of torture, isolation, and medical neglect in these centers.

In separate legal developments, a Venezuelan court unanimously acquitted three individuals—two retired military members and one civilian—of charges related to the 2024 military uprising, citing insufficient evidence. Additionally, three military personnel previously accused in the ‘Brazalete Blanco’ case were released from the Ramo Verde prison. Meanwhile, government official Jorge Arreaza stated that the issue of political prisoners has not been part of the current negotiation agenda between the government and the opposition.
