Donald Trump claims Mexico and others harmed US with tariffs
President Donald Trump told a crowd in Las Vegas that Mexico, China, Japan, South Korea, Germany and Canada have “hurt” the United States economy for years with tariffs. He defended his trade approach, saying tariffs are his favorite word and that they have made America “rich”. Trump announced a new tariff framework that replaces the old Section 122 with a Section 301‑based mechanism tied to investigations of forced‑labour goods.
Mexican Economy Secretary Marcelo Ebrard responded that the new U.S. scheme does not change the zero‑tariff treatment for products that meet the T‑MEC rules of origin, while goods that do not qualify will continue to face the standard 10 % duty. He noted that the third round of T‑MEC negotiations took place in Mexico City from 21 to 23 July, and a fourth round is scheduled for early September in Washington.
Trump reiterated that the tariff policy has produced “hundreds of billions of dollars” of benefits for the United States and that the United States is now “richer” because of it.
