Venezuela seismic activity stabilizes following June earthquake
Seismic activity in Venezuela is progressively returning to background seismicity levels following the devastating double earthquake on June 24, 2026. Feliciano De Santis, president of the Venezuelan Society of Geologists, reported a sustained decrease in both the frequency and magnitude of aftershocks over the last three months.
While initial scientific models predicted secondary tremors with magnitudes between 5 and 6, the release of accumulated energy in the tectonic plates has occurred in a gradual and controlled manner. This process has helped avoid larger shocks in urban areas and accelerated the return to tectonic equilibrium in major fault systems, including the Boconó, San Sebastián, and El Pilar faults.
During a conference in Barquisimeto, De Santis addressed urban vulnerability and infrastructure challenges. He emphasized the urgent need for municipalities to implement seismic microzonation plans to better manage regional risks.
