Venezuela oil deal grants U.S. preferential access to reserves
The United States and the Venezuelan government have entered into a significant energy agreement involving North American Blue Energy Partners (NABEP). Under the terms of the deal, the U.S. gains access to approximately one-fifth of Venezuela’s crude reserves. The Pentagon’s Office of Strategic Capital will hold a 35 percent stake in NABEP, while the State Department maintains the right to purchase 20 percent of the company's oil at cost, with preferential access to the remaining 80 percent of output.
U.S. Energy Secretary Chris Wright projected that Venezuelan oil production could exceed two million barrels per day by 2030. This follows recent increases in production, which have already surpassed 1.2 million barrels per day. PDVSA officials expect these new agreements to drive economic growth and production through the implementation of new technologies, including artificial intelligence and remote monitoring.
The agreement has faced intense criticism from Venezuelan opposition leader María Corina Machado, who questioned the legitimacy of the current administration to negotiate the nation's resources. She expressed concerns regarding transparency and the ultimate beneficiaries of the deal. Meanwhile, Venezuelan officials have called for a total removal of sanctions to further support the industry's recovery.
