Venezuela extends housing registration for earthquake‑displaced families
Following the twin earthquakes on 24 June, Venezuela's Ministry of Habitat and Housing has rolled out a Registro Único de Vivienda to catalogue families that lost homes in La Guaira, Miranda and surrounding areas. By late July, Governor José Alejandro Terán reported that 21 075 households – representing 71 120 people – had been registered in La Guaira, using biometric verification to prevent fraud.
The registration points, initially set for three days, have been kept open for as long as needed. Minister Paola Posani said the Caraballeda site in La Guaira will remain operational beyond the planned period, adding a dedicated desk for elderly and disabled persons. Similar sessions began in Miranda on 25 July at the Unidad Educativa El Libertador in Chacao, overseen by Governor Elio Serrán and Assembly Vice‑President Pedro Infante.
A separate report from Vice‑President Héctor Rodríguez listed 107 temporary camps across the Capital District, La Guaira, Miranda and Aragua, housing 24 477 people – about 87 % of their combined capacity. The government is also working with private construction firms, coordinated by the Presidential Commission for Habitat and Infrastructure chaired by Francisco Garcés, to accelerate repairs, complete unfinished housing projects and build new earthquake‑resistant homes. The national engineers’ association has mobilised roughly 6 000 engineers to inspect damaged structures.
