Venezuela launches school recovery plan following earthquake damage

The Venezuelan government has launched a large-scale plan to recover educational infrastructure ahead of the school year scheduled to begin on September 14. The initiative follows earthquakes on June 24 that damaged approximately 900 of the country’s 27,000 schools. Officials report that 11 institutions collapsed and 80 others suffered structural damage.

Acting President Delcy Rodríguez announced that 18,000 workers are participating in the recovery efforts to ensure more than six million students can return to classes. To support this, the government has implemented a “rezonificación” process, relocating students from damaged buildings to nearby functional schools or temporary camps.

In areas like La Guaira, educators have established “escuelas carpa” (tent schools) within temporary displacement camps to provide pedagogical support and recreational activities for children who have lost access to their regular classrooms. The government is also offering specialized training for construction workers, such as plumbers and electricians, to integrate them into the ‘Venezuela Renace’ plan to assist with both school and housing repairs.
