Argentina faces record suicide rate amid mental health crisis
Argentina is facing a critical mental health crisis, with the suicide rate reaching a record high of 11.8 deaths per 100,000 inhabitants. This figure exceeds the global average estimated by the World Health Organization and has surpassed deaths from other violent incidents in the country.
Data indicates that the phenomenon is particularly prevalent among adolescents and young adults, specifically in the 14 to 25 age range. In the city of Rosario, suicides increased by 53.4% between 2023 and 2025, with the highest concentration among men aged 20 to 44.
In response, the Province of Buenos Aires has launched a prevention plan that includes 24-hour mental health assistance lines and the hiring of over 100 specialized professionals. Nationally, Senator Jorge Capitanich has introduced a bill to amend the National Suicide Prevention Law (27.130) to establish national guidelines for prevention, care, and postvention, including psychosocial support for families and guaranteed budget allocations.
