Venezuela transition: Opposition backs 2027 election date
Following the January 3, 2026, United States military operation that resulted in the capture of Nicolás Maduro, Venezuela is navigating a period of political transition. Former Colombian President Iván Duque stated that the current administration under Delcy Rodríguez lacks real power, asserting that the United States now exerts control over the country while the transition to democracy continues.
In the midst of this shift, opposition leader Juan Pablo Guanipa has expressed support for a proposal by U.S. Republican Senator Bernie Moreno to set July 24, 2027, as the date for Venezuela’s next presidential elections. Guanipa emphasized that establishing a concrete date is a decisive step toward rebuilding the nation. This proposal has also received backing from Nobel Peace Prize winner María Corina Machado.
