Venezuelan activists propose amnesty law and reparations for political prisoners

Human rights activists and former political prisoners in Venezuela are calling for comprehensive reforms to address the treatment and legal status of detainees. Javier Tarazona, president of the NGO Fundaredes, has proposed drafting a new amnesty law to ensure the full release of all political prisoners, arguing that current legislation is exclusionary. Tarazona also suggested creating a national fund to provide reparations to detainees and their families for damages incurred during detention, such as travel costs for court appearances and prison visits.

Simultaneously, members of the Red de Ex presos Políticos por la Democracia (RED) have urged acting President Delcy Rodríguez to allow the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights to verify official lists of released prisoners. While the government reported 1,046 releases following the capture of Nicolás Maduro, activists claim the process lacks transparency. The group is advocating for a policy of integral reparation, which includes the removal of criminal records and the end of financial stigmatization, such as frozen bank accounts, for victims of political detention.
