Venezuelan Deputy Jessica Carolina de León Killed in La Guaira Earthquakes
Deputy Jessica Carolina de León of the ruling PSUV party and her daughter died when two powerful earthquakes struck La Guaira on 24 June 2026. The National Assembly held a special session on 14 July 2026 to honour the legislator. Assembly president Jorge Rodríguez led a minute of applause, praised the rapid response of La Guaira deputies, and noted the loss of seven regional directors in the disaster. He also highlighted deputy María Gabriela Vega (Sosa), who survived because she was attending a judicial nominations meeting, although her home was destroyed. Governor Alejandro Terán’s residence was completely ruined, but he immediately joined rescue and aid efforts. Rodríguez urged unity, saying, “These are not times for polarization… these are times to extend a helping hand and care for our brothers and sisters who suffered material losses.”
