Venezuelan earthquake relief honored at World Cup Mexico‑Ecuador match

Minutes before the opening whistle of the World Cup 2026 group match between Mexico and Ecuador at Mexico City’s Estadio Azteca, thousands of fans raised their voices in a unified chant of “¡No están solos!” to show solidarity with Venezuela, which was reeling from a devastating double earthquake on 24 June. The chant was echoed by FIFA president Gianni Infantino and Mexican Football Federation commissioner Mikel Arriola.

The disasters in Venezuela have left nearly 2 000 dead, over 10 000 injured and more than 15 000 displaced, prompting rescue crews and humanitarian aid from Mexico, Ecuador and other nations to be deployed to the hardest‑hit areas such as La Guaira. The stadium tribute highlighted the broader international response and the empathy of Latin American football fans.
