Venezuelan earthquake survivors expected to migrate to Colombia and Mexico

The International Organization for Migration warned that families displaced by the June 24 earthquakes in Venezuela could move toward the Colombian border if humanitarian aid is not delivered promptly. State Táchira politician Óscar Ronderos said, “Es posible que esto pueda ocurrir en los próximos días…”, noting the severe needs of affected households. Colombian authorities have observed a rise in Venezuelan crossings at bridges to Cúcuta, where local officials and the Catholic Church are running solidarity drives to collect aid.

In northern Mexico, civil organisations in Tijuana anticipate a surge of Venezuelan migrants seeking refuge. The shelter Movimiento Juventud 2000, supported by the Alianza Migrante, received a donation of food, hygiene items and camping equipment from a group of San Diego content creators. Shelter coordinator José María García Lara said the contribution “alivia los costos diarios” and provides a morale boost. The facility is already operating at maximum regulated capacity, and the influx of new arrivals could strain resources further as migrants cite the combined impact of economic crisis and earthquake devastation in Venezuela.
