Venezuelan immigrants shift from Miami to smaller US cities
An analysis of federal data from 2018 to 2025 reveals a shifting pattern in Venezuelan immigration to the United States. While Miami has long served as a primary hub, many of the one million Venezuelans released into the country following a record immigration surge are instead settling in smaller cities and growing suburbs.
Key destinations include Utah, particularly the areas south of Salt Lake City, as well as metro regions in Chicago, Denver, Atlanta, Dallas, and Houston. Immigrants are also moving to smaller municipalities such as Madison, Wisconsin; Albuquerque, New Mexico; and Savannah, Georgia.
Drivers for this shift include the search for better employment opportunities, more affordable housing, reduced traffic, and a higher overall quality of life. This trend of bypassing traditional immigrant enclaves is also observed among other groups, such as Cubans moving to Kentucky and Texas, and Colombians settling in Boston and Denver.
